Trust the Process, But What Process?

August 31, 2020

Many of us are all too familiar with the phrase, “Trust the process”. But what happens when there is no process to trust or no trust in the process?

By definition, management is the administration of people, technology, jobs, and resources to effectively achieve organizational objectives. Management Systems, specifically, are the tools, policies, processes, and procedures used to manage the business in order to achieve set objectives.

An organization can be looked at as a total system containing smaller subsystems, all of which are in complex interaction with each other, allowing for interdepartmental cohesiveness. The survival and prosperity of an organization depends on effective management of systems (tools). There is a simple connection here. Organizations must have objectives; objectives are achieved through strategies; and strategies are best implemented with systems.

While many may think that management systems are complex and IT or software related…that is not always the case. These systems can be as simple as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) used to manage operations within the business.

For example, does your organization have a formal hiring process? How about onboarding of staff or clients? How does the company handle expense reporting?  Is Finance involved in operational activities? How about HR? When your sales team meets with clients, what are the guidelines given? The Do’s and Don’ts?  As an organization, is the team equipped with the tools they need to succeed?

These tools, complex and simple, help businesses and business owners organize their companies by finding ways to best utilize available technology, resources, and personnel. It is the responsibility of top management to design an appropriate organizational structure, establish the goals/objectives, display fiscal responsibility, and have a system whereby all the above is accomplished. Once systems are in place, and executed consistently, the organization will run like a well-oiled machine.

Does your organization have a process that can be trusted?
